Dad had to be a seing-eye-dog

Three-year-old Edis from Sarajevo in Jugoslavia came to Denmark on a UN-flight, because he was going completely blind. But the danish hospitalsystem gave up on him, and it was not untill they came to an acupuncturist in Jutland, that the family had a restored hope.
New hope
Aulum: Three-year-old Edis Adilovic has regained his belief, that he will one day be able to play football. The little boy from Sarajevo came to Denmark, because his sight was gradually become worse. But the doctors could not help. It was not untill they met an acupuncturist in Jutland, that the family regained their hope. “Dad, there is the car” shouts Edis, as we meet him outside the acupuncture clinic in Aulum close to Herning. He runs across the parkinglot, stops in front of the cardoor, opens it and sits himpelt behind the steeringwheel. Three weeks ago we met him for the first time at a refugee-center in Stenlille. There, his father had to act as a seeing-eye-dog for him, because Edis walked into everything.
BT took the initiative
Acupuncturist John Boel immediately said yes, when B.T. asked him, if he would try to treat Edis. “The doctor, who works with us on a stable basis thinks, that it is a rare disease, which is called Sacoidosis,” says John Boel.
Rigshospitalet (The Danish National Hospital)
Children are rarely struck by this disease. Symptoms as blindness, fever and lungproblems are typical, and what happen is, that the bodys immune defense attacks itself, to state it in a simple way. Our doctor reached the diagnosis from the tests, which had been conducted at the “Rigshospital” in Copenhagen. Edis was discharged without any treatment, and the parents were handed the papers and xrays together with the message, that their boy would never regain his sight. From the papers we could tell, that it was not possible for the doctors to ascertain, what Edis is suffering from, says John Boel.
During the first visit with the acupuncturist, John Boel tried to treat Edis with needles, but the boy was crying a lot. Therefore he started stimulating the same points with laserbeams – and in a few days, there was allready an improvement.
Edis right eye was completely closed, so I could not do anything there. But the left one is not so badly damaged from the disease.
From the Rigshospital´s examination, Edis had only 2% of his sight left on his left eye, before he came to Aulum”.
The doctors could not help
Edis was only one year old, when his sight began to gradually disappear. A doctor thought, that it was psychologically determined, and that Edis himself wished to get away from all the horrific things, that he did not want to see. Another expert came to the conclusion, that the boy must have a tumor on the optic nerve. And he strongly recommended, that Edis should be treated abroad. “The hopelessness became our companion at the refugee-center. The danish doctors had made it abundantly clear, that we should not count on any improvement for our boy. On the contrary” says Ibro Adilovic.
“But by John Boel, we were taken seriously for the first time. For every day of this week, where we have been here, I have been able to see improvement in Edis sight. Now he sees the contours of for example cars. Previously, he could only register, if the television was on or off. Now he can see the people on the screen”, says Edis father.
